The Black Pearl Relay, explained

Open Seas is the genre's classic: an empty arena where the only objectives are each other. The Black Pearl Relay adds two landmarks that change what winning means.

What's on the board

Two visible wrap-and-charge landmarks โ€” the Port Capstan and the Starboard Capstan. Wrapping a capstan with your crew charges it; the relay is played between the two objectives, which means the board has geography: places that matter, routes between them, and predictable traffic. On Open Seas, fights happen wherever two greeds collide. On the Relay, you know where everyone eventually has to go.

How objectives change the fight

Predictable traffic is ambush country. The routes between capstans concentrate players the way treasure piles do, but on a schedule โ€” which makes every skill in the strategy guide sharper. The pinch gets stronger because capstan approaches limit escape lines. The bait gets stronger because a charging captain is a distracted captain wrapped in a predictable circle. And wrapping itself is commitment: a worm coiled around a capstan has traded mobility for progress, and everyone can see it.

When to pick which board

Open Seas for pure hunting, first sessions, and the classic feel โ€” it's the default for a reason. The Relay when your friend room wants structure: objectives give a match a story arc beyond survival, and they give less aggressive players a way to contribute that isn't dueling. A new room keeps the board its first captain chose, so decide before you share the code.
