Games like Slither.io: the best worm arenas

Slither.io defined a genre in 2016: steer a growing worm, make rivals hit your body, absorb what they drop. A decade later, the games built on that idea differ more than they look. Here's an honest map — including where our own game fits and where it doesn't.

What actually makes a worm arena good

Every game in this genre shares three rules: your head is your only weakness, growth comes from what you collect, and a bigger body is both your weapon and your liability. What separates a great one from a forgettable one is usually invisible in a screenshot:

  1. Where the reward comes from. When you cut a rival down, does their mass actually drop where they died, or does a score counter just tick up? Conserved mass creates the vulture-circling drama that made the original famous.
  2. What boosting costs. Speed that costs nothing turns every fight into a twitch race. Speed that burns your own size — and drops it behind you where anyone can take it — makes sprinting a genuine decision.
  3. Who decides collisions. Games that let each device judge its own collisions feel fine until a laggy player kills you through what looked like empty water. Server-decided collisions cost a little smoothness and buy a lot of fairness.
  4. How it monetizes. The genre's free-to-play economics range from tasteful cosmetics to aggressive video-ad walls between every run. This changes how a game feels more than any mechanic.

The games worth your time

Slither.io — the original, still worth playing
The purest version of the idea and still the biggest name. Simple growth, dropped mass on death, one boost mechanic. Its age shows in the presentation and the ad load, but the core loop remains exactly as compulsive as it was in 2016. If you've somehow never played it, start here to understand everything else on this list.
Wormate — the snack-food arms race
Faster and more sugar-coated: candy skins, potions and power-ups layered over the classic loop. It leans arcade — more pickups, more effects, quicker runs. If you find the classic pace too patient, this is the energetic end of the genre.
Worms Zone — growth as spectacle
Built around the joy of getting enormous, with abundant food and a generous arena. Less cut-throat than the original; runs last longer and the fantasy is snowballing size rather than knife-fight positioning. Popular on mobile, with the monetization patterns that implies.
Little Big Snake — the most "game" of them all
Progression systems, quests, levels, a flying companion, clan mechanics — the deepest meta-game in the genre wrapped around a solid arena. If you want something to level up between runs, this is it; if you want a pure arena, the systems can feel like weight.
Wormax.io — the tactical one
Adds stop-on-demand, teleports and toggleable abilities to the formula, which turns close fights into something closer to a duel of cooldowns. Slower to learn, and the skill expression is real.

Where Wormifi fits — and where it doesn't

Wormifi is our entry, so judge this paragraph with that in mind. We built it around one design law: nothing appears from nowhere. Cut a rival and their conserved mass drops as marked hoard treasure exactly where they fell. Sprint and the size you spend scatters behind you in your own colour, collectable by anyone — including whoever is chasing you. Collisions are decided by one server authority in live rooms, so a cut means the same thing for everyone. There are no ads before play, no account, nothing that interrupts a run, and it installs to your phone without an app store — solo modes work offline.

Where it doesn't fit: if you want a deep meta-game with quests and levels, Little Big Snake does that and we deliberately don't. And our live multiplayer is an honest preview — one shared server-authoritative room, not yet a global network of thousands. The games above have years of scale on us; what we offer is the tightest version of the core loop we could build, told honestly.

The quick pick

First time in the genre: Slither.io, then everything else makes sense. Fast and flashy: Wormate. The joy of getting huge: Worms Zone. Progression brain: Little Big Snake. Tactical duels: Wormax.io. Pure loop, honest physics, no interruptions: Wormifi — play it free in your browser.
