Mobile controls for worm games, done right

On desktop the genre is a pointer game and everyone's equal. On a phone, the control scheme IS the difficulty setting — and most games only ship one.

The three schemes

Drag-anywhere: your worm follows your thumb wherever it lands — intuitive, but your thumb covers the action at the worst moments. Fixed left helm: a virtual wheel under your left thumb, steering relative to it, screen stays visible. Fixed right helm: the same for right-thumb captains. The fixed helms trade a little intuition for full visibility and one-handed play — which matters when your other hand is holding a subway rail.

Picking yours in Wormifi

The launcher offers all three — DRAG, LEFT HELM, RIGHT HELM — before every run, and the choice sticks. Sprint mirrors to the free side on a fixed helm. Desktop players steer with the pointer or WASD/arrows with Space or Shift to sprint; keyboard players can Tab to reach exit and sprint controls, because playability includes people who don't use a mouse. Rotate to landscape on a phone — the arena is built wide.

One honest tip

Whatever the game, pick the fixed helm on the side of your dominant thumb and give it two runs before judging. Drag feels better for thirty seconds; the helm wins the third fight, when seeing the whole screen is the difference between a pinch you saw coming and one you didn't.
